Discovering the Ultimate Winter Wonderland
Imagine waking up to the sound of snowfall, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Ontario’s Blue Mountains. For Catherine and David Staples, this dream became a reality when they stumbled upon a stunning chalet in the heart of the Orchard at Craigleith community. With its proximity to the private Craigleith Ski Club and the larger Blue Mountain Resort, this charming abode was the perfect haven for their family of avid skiers.
A Chance Encounter
The Staples’ journey to this winter wonderland began in 2011, when they were searching for a chalet to rent for the winter. A friend introduced them to the owner of the property, who surprisingly revealed that she had decided to put the house up for sale instead. Catherine and David couldn’t resist the opportunity to own a piece of paradise, especially with their three kids eager to hit the slopes.
Creating Lasting Memories
The Staples purchased the property, which came furnished, and quickly made it their own. The timber frame great room, with its soaring ceilings and Douglas fir posts, became the heart of their home, where they would gather around the fireplace after a long day of skiing. The open plan design, complete with a dining area and large kitchen, was perfect for family meals and cozy nights in. As their children grew and pursued their passions, the Staples found themselves spending more and more time in their beloved chalet.
A Community of Like-Minded Individuals
The Orchard at Craigleith community, where the Staples reside, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. With its “parcel of tied land” fee, residents can enjoy beautifully maintained shared areas, adding to the property’s allure. The surrounding area offers a plethora of activities, from skiing and snowboarding to hiking and exploring caves. The Staples’ daughter and two sons thrived in this environment, with their parents cheering them on at every turn.
A Home Transformed
Over the years, the Staples have put their own touch on the property, making it a true reflection of their personalities. Catherine, a designer, repainted the dark green walls a crisp white, flooding the interior with natural light. The couple updated the kitchen, replacing the gas range with an induction cooktop and installing new countertops. They also renovated the lower level, creating a recreation room, a fifth bedroom, and a ski tuning room – a haven for Dr. Staples’ cycling and skiing gear.
A Thriving Arts Community
Collingwood, the town just outside the Blue Mountains, is a hub of creative activity. Catherine, who founded a design firm, has fallen in love with the local arts community, collaborating with talented artists and artisans. The area’s unique blend of outdoor adventure and cultural attractions makes it an ideal destination for those seeking a balanced lifestyle.
Rejuvenation and Relaxation
The Staples’ property is a masterclass in relaxation, with plenty of opportunities to unwind after a day on the slopes. Recent additions, such as a cold plunge and a new bathroom with a steam shower, have elevated the home to a luxurious retreat. The outdoor sauna, nestled in a modern hut amidst the trees, is a serene oasis, where one can watch the snow fall while surrounded by nature’s splendor.
A Haven for the Senses
As the Staples look back on their journey, they realize that their chalet has become so much more than just a home – it’s a sanctuary, a haven where they can connect with nature, their loved ones, and themselves. Whether you’re an avid skier, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, this enchanting property is sure to inspire a sense of wonder and awe, inviting you to create your own lasting memories in the heart of Ontario’s Blue Mountains.
