St. Scholastica Sports Roundup: Thrilling Wins and Heartbreaking Losses

The St. Scholastica Saints have been making waves in the sports world, with their women’s hockey team sweeping a ranked St. Norbert team and their basketball teams facing off against tough opponents. In this roundup, we’ll dive into the exciting wins and heartbreaking losses that have defined the Saints’ recent performances.

Women’s Hockey: Saints Sweep St. Norbert

The St. Scholastica women’s hockey team had a phenomenal weekend, taking down the No. 7-ranked St. Norbert Green Knights in a non-conference series at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth. On Friday, the Saints secured a 3-1 victory, with Isabella Brama, Victoria Nelson, and Hanley Block scoring the game’s first three goals. The Saints’ defense was solid, keeping St. Norbert off the board until a power play goal with just over 10 minutes to go. Goalie Makenzie Cole had a standout performance, stopping 44 shots, including 20 in the third period alone.

The Saints continued their winning streak on Saturday, with Cole making 38 saves in a 1-0 shutout win. Suzi Vidmar’s goal with 1:34 left in the second period proved to be the game-winner, as the Saints held off the Green Knights’ offense. This impressive sweep has the Saints looking strong as they head into Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Men’s Hockey: Wisconsin Teams Stymie Saints

The St. Scholastica men’s hockey team faced a tough weekend, failing to secure a win against Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Wisconsin-River Falls. On Friday, the Saints took an early lead with Kieran Chung’s goal, but the Pointers quickly tied the game and took the lead. Despite Eino Rissanen’s 35 saves, the Saints were outshot 39-17 and ultimately fell short.

Saturday’s game against Wisconsin-River Falls was equally disappointing, with the Saints being blanked 3-0. The Saints managed 33 shots on goal, but couldn’t get past UWRF goalie Brennan Boynton. Rissanen made 32 saves for the Saints, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win. The Saints will look to bounce back as they head into a two-game MIAC series at Concordia-Moorhead.

Women’s Basketball: Saints Pull Away from Oles

The St. Scholastica women’s basketball team had a strong showing against St. Olaf, forcing 20 turnovers and holding the Oles to 33% shooting in a 64-50 MIAC win. The Saints took control of the game with a 9-2 run, leading by as much as 12 in the third quarter. Kloey Lind led the Saints with 18 points, while Evie Schmitz added 16 and Ava Haus scored 11. The Saints’ victory improves their record to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the MIAC.

Men’s Basketball: Big Shot Eludes Saints at St. Olaf

The St. Scholastica men’s basketball team came agonizingly close to securing a win against St. Olaf, but ultimately fell short in a 73-71 MIAC defeat. The Saints had three opportunities to tie the game or take the lead in the last minute, but missed two shots and turned the ball over. Despite a strong rally, the Saints couldn’t overcome the Oles’ early lead. Davion Butler scored 20 points for the Saints, including 10-for-10 free-throw shooting, while Aaron Keykal and Hayden Kloos added 17 points apiece. The Saints will look to regroup as they head into a game against Macalester on Wednesday night.
